Brief Introduction of Xiangyang Municipal Museum

    Xiangyang Municipal Museum(Xiangyang Municipal Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, Xiangyang Municipal Heritage Restoration Center) was established in 1975, which is the central mechanism of cultural relics preservation, exhibition, public education, social services, archaeological survey and excavation, also the protection and scientific research of cultural relics in Xiangyang.

    This site locates in Zhaoming Stage, the center of ancient city of Xiangyang. It was built in the northern and Southern Dynasties, dedicated to commemorate Xiao Tong, the Prince Zhaoming of the Liang Dynasty, who compiled The selected works of Zhao Ming, the earliest anthology of poetry in China. As the landmark building in Xiangyang, Zhaoming Stage was destroyed in 1973, and rebuilt in 1992. It covers the areas about 4020 square meters, its built-up area is 9739 square meters,exhibition area is 3200 square meters, warehouse area is 1200 square meters.

    Xiangyang Municipal Museum (Xiangyang Municipal Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology) collects different kinds of cultural relics more than thirty thousand pieces (sets) in different times. There are 5235 pieces of above the third grade of precious cultural relics, 112 pieces of first level cultural relics, 385pieces of secondary artifacts , 4738 pieces of third class cultural relics. Including gold and silver, bronze, ceramics, jade, lacquer ware, ancient calligraphy and painting, epitaph rubbings, stone carvings, and so on. With features of a variety of textures, categories and shapes, obviously times characteristics. Cultural relics of the pre-Qin period, especially with a large number of inscriptions on bronzes, relates to Chu, Deng, Zeng, Cai, E, Huang, Xu, Ruo, Wu, Zheng, Wei and Xian etc, those constitute the Xiangyang collections of cultural relics and historical ,cultural characteristics.

    The basical exhibition of Xiangyang Municipal Museum is the "footsteps of listening to the civilization, the north and south of the rhyme" as the theme of Xiangyang ancient history and culture exhibition. The museum is divided into five unit through nearly 900 items, include prehistoric Xiangyang, pre-Qin period Xiangyang, Qin and Han Dynasties Xiangyang, the three kingdoms period to northern and Southern Dynasties Xiangyang, and the Sui Tang Dynasty to Ming and Qing Dynasties period, introducing the development survey of Xiangyang’s history and culture comprehensively.

At the same time, the Xiangyang Municipal Museum holds 3-8 temporary exhibitions through the production, introduction, joint management and other forms yearly . Since opened for free in the end of 2008, it has held more than 30 kinds of temporary exhibitions. The average of annual reception audience more than three hundred thousand person-time. Xiangyang Municipal Museum is a patriotism education base in Hubei Province, conducts all kinds of public education and social service activities ever year, which the annual“Museum in schools ”and “Xiang Bo Jian Bao”activities in Xiangyang has a certain degree of visibility, and becomes a brand.

    The institute of archaeology completed more than 20 industrial and non-industrial projects in the archaeological investigation and exploration yearly, with exploration area of 2000 acres, excavation site area of 2000 square meters, tombs more than 100 seats, and unearthed various types relics more than 1000 pieces .

    The heritage restoration center has the first-class restoration equipment and technology. At present, in addition to repairing more than 200 pieces of bronze for the museum, it also repairs more than 3000 pieces of bronzes for above 30 national, provincial, municipal, county museum and institute of archaeology, meanwhile, it copied the first, second grade of national bronze more than 30 pieces of.

    The museum provides the following services: free reception to museum visitors, consultant, register, explaining for them freely; each year, using international museum day and cultural heritage day   identifies freely for public collections, also providing consultant for heritage enthusiasts or collectors , the people who intend to donate relics and specimens in the daily time. Developing cultural tourism souvenirs relied on the heritage resources and selling related travel commodity; for exchanging and researching of related units provide information; preserving the collections for the used units or individuals according to their need; undertaking outer metal cultural relics restoration and replication.

    The opening time of the museum is from Sunday to Tuesday every week 9:00-17:00(Visitor stop at 16:00, and 16:30 admission, the exhibition hall cleared); It’s closed on Monday (in case of national holidays opens as usual, the first working day after vacation closed) and new year's Eve day, special closed day will be noticed.
